Physical Description

Support

Parchment. 145 x 105 mm.

Number of Leaves

341 leaves, of which 2 now function pastedowns (partially raised), and two are flyleaves.

Foliation

1 (unfoliated pastedown) + 337 + 2 (foliated parchment flyleaves) + 1 (unfoliated pastedown). Modern foliation in Arabic numerals in pencil 1-339.

Collation

44 quires, each of 8 leaves, with the exception of the quire designated 1 (fols. 5-11), which contains 7 leaves. Estimate of content lost: 2 leaves of the unnumbered initial quire (after fol. 3, portrait of the Evangelist Matthew, and possibly an inscription); 2 leaves of quire 6 (after fol. 43, Matthew 13:32, ending at, κατασκηνο[υν], and beginning on fol. 44r with 13:54 at, πατριδα αυτου); 1 leaf of quire 12 (after fol. 96, portrait of the Evangelist Mark); 1 leaf of quire 20 (after fol. 155, portrait of the Evangelist Luke, and possibly an inscription); 2 leaves of quire 34, wrongly labeled 33 (after fol. 268, portrait of the Evangelist John, a headpiece, an initial, and text 1:1-14).

Primarily quires were numbered on the last leaf (verso, lower inner margin) and specified according to gospel content. These were later renumbered sequentially on the first leaf (recto, upper margin), and are extant from fol. 12r, β-μγ.

Leaves used as padding between the pastedowns and boards are fragmented. Evangelist portraits cut out of the manuscript, parchment stubs remain. Several leaves of the primary quire are loose. Paint of Matthew's initial has run owing to water damage. Water and minor dirt stains. Instances of text overwritten in black ink. Some trimming of margins.

Binding Description

Bound in light brown leather over thin boards.
