Headpieces primarily of red and black decorated with interlace, leaf and vine scrolls, or infilled with floral motifs.

Initials

Major initials (30-55 mm) in red set off from text and embellished with ribbon, bead, and leaf motifs. Minor initials set off from the text in red.

Collation

19 quires extant, each of 8 leaves, with the exception of quire 12 of 7 leaves, and quire 19 of 10 leaves. Estimate of content lost: leaf 1, quire 6 (after fol. 40, lacks ending of Hypothesis of Romans, and Romans, 1:1 to 1:18. Begins on fol. 41r with 1:18 at, αδικια κατεχοντων); leaves 4 and 5, quire 7 (after fol. 50, ends with Romans 13:4 at, Θεου γαρ διακονος εστι. Begins on fol. 51r with Romans 15:26 at, κοινωνιαν τινα ποιησασθαι); unknown number of leaves (after fol. 150, Menologion ends at June 17).

Remnants of quire numbers in faded brown ink are extant on the first folio of some quires (recto, lower outer margin). Quire numbers of a later set are present on the first folio (recto, lower margin) and last folio (verso) of each quire.

1 column, 30 lines. Ruling with hard point.

Writing

Written in minuscule script in dark brown ink (some flaking).

Punctuation includes middle and low points, comma, and double point. Several instances of quotation marks in the left margins next to lines of quoted text.

Methods of correction consist of erasure and additions in the text, and the margins. A correction to Hebrews (12:28 -13:7, fol. 126v) included an erasure of 14 lines, and a rewritting of text in the initial space and the lower margin.

Condition

Leaves slightly cockled. Some parchment broken off at the corners. Text rubbed in a number of areas. Water, dirt, and grease stains.

Binding Description

Bound in blind-stamped medium brown leather over boards. Nail holes (front and back) of straps once attached. Fore-edge pegs (1 remaining). Pastedowns of paper.

History

Origin

The manuscript is judged to have been written in the 12th century. A place of origin is unknown.

Provenance

Medieval to the early 20th century provenance unknown.

Acquisition

Acquired by the University of Chicago from Ibrahim Elias Géjou, Paris art dealer, with funds donated by Ira Maurice Price, professor of Semitic Languages and Literatures, and Elizabeth Mellor Price, his wife. The manuscript was named in honor of Dr. Price.
