Headpiece of multi-colored floral, foliate, and geometric motifs at the beginning of the readings for the Gospel of Luke.

Initials

Major initials (45-70 mm) primarily in blue, red, green, and gold set off from the text and embellished with floral and bead designs. Minor initials in red overlaid with gold.

Writing

Written in minuscule script in dark brown ink (some flaking). Ecphonetic notation in red.

Punctuation includes the cross (full stop), middle point, and the mark of elision.

Text Divisions

Titles in red overlaid with gold.

Condition

Leaves trimmed. Edges rounded. Occasional water stains.

Binding Description

Bound by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company in green linen over cardboard. Spine label in gilt: Four Gospel Lectionary Folios (Matthew-Luke) 13-14 cent.

History

Origin

The manuscript to which the present leaves belonged is judged to have been written in the early 13th century, possibly in Constantinople, the present-day Istanbul, Turkey.

Provenance

Medieval to early 20th century provenance unknown. Belonged to Harold Rideout Willoughby (1890-1962), professor in the University of Chicago's Divinity School. Mr. Willoughby purchased the leaves from Philip C. Duschnes (New York), ca. 1938.

Acquisition

Gift of Harold R. Willoughby to the University of Chicago, November 1938.
