Written in minuscule script in black ink (some flaking).

Punctuation includes the cross (full stop), middle point, comma, and marks of elision and interrogation.

Headings in uncial script in red (faded).

Condition

Random holes. Edges are irregular. Some leaves trimmed resulting in the loss of text written in the margins.

Bound by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company in dark blue linen over cardboard. Front cover label in gilt: Four Lectionary Leaves (Matthew) XIV cent.

History

Origin

The manuscript to which the present leaves belonged is judged to have been written in the 14th century in Italy.

Provenance

Late medieval to early 20th century provenance unknown. Belonged to Harold Rideout Willoughby (1890-1962), professor in the University of Chicago's Divinity School. Mr. Willoughby purchased the leaves from Philip C. Duschnes (New York), ca. 1938.
